Kilometers to Steps Calculator

Returns the step count needed to cover a given distance in kilometers, based on your height and pace. The stride formula adjusts for walking vs. running so a 5 km target gives you a realistic number, not a generic one.

Converting Kilometers to Steps

To reach a kilometer target, you need roughly 1,400 steps — but the exact number depends on your stride. The formula divides the distance by your stride length.

steps = (distancekm × 100,000) ÷ stridecm
distance
Kilometers you want to convert.
100,000
Centimeters in a kilometer.
stride
Centimeters per step — about 0.414 × height in cm for walking.
Worked example
pace = Moderate walk
height = 170 cm
distance = 5 km
= 7,104 steps

Stride = 170 × 0.414 = 70.4 cm. 500,000 cm ÷ 70.4 cm = 7,104 steps.

Step Counts for Popular Race Distances

The four distances most runners and walkers aim at, with step estimates for a 170 cm adult.

1,421 steps

1K

Around 1,420 walking steps, 1,300 running. A parkrun warm-up or a short track effort. Inside the 15-minute walking window for most adults.

7,103 steps

5K

~7,100 walking or ~6,540 running steps. The Saturday parkrun staple and the most common charity race in Europe.

14,205 steps

10K

Around 14,200 walking or 13,100 running steps. A solid benchmark for aerobic fitness, usually covered in 60–90 minutes running.

~30,000 steps

Half marathon (21.1 km)

Roughly 30,000 walking steps or 27,600 running. Expect cadence to drop 3–5 spm in the second half as fatigue builds.

Walking vs. Running a Kilometer

The same kilometer, two activity modes. Stride lengthens, cadence rises, and total step count drops when you move from a walk to a run.

Turning a Route Into a Step Target

A short walk-through of how to use the output to plan a route that hits your daily step goal exactly.

  1. 1
    Pick your daily step goal
    Paluch 2022 shows benefits plateau around 7,000–9,000 steps for adults under 60. Use a realistic number you can repeat on most days.
    goal = 8,000 steps
  2. 2
    Subtract what you accumulate without trying
    Errands, stairs, and incidental walking typically account for 2,000–3,500 steps a day for a desk worker.
    incidental = 2,500 steps
  3. 3
    Convert the remaining gap to kilometers
    Divide the gap by your personal steps-per-km (1,421 for a 170 cm walker) to get the distance.
    kmneeded = (8,000 − 2,500) / 1,421 = 3.87 km
  4. 4
    Plan the walk
    A 3.9 km loop at moderate pace takes about 48 minutes. Adjust the loop length for lighter or busier days.
    time = 3.87 / 4.8 × 60 = ~48 minutes
An 8,000-step day = a ~3.9 km walk on top of incidental movement.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps is 1 kilometer?
Approximately 1,200–1,600 walking steps, with 1,421 being the average for a 170 cm adult at moderate pace. Taller walkers need about 1,300; shorter walkers around 1,560.
How many steps is 5 km?
About 7,100 walking steps for a 170 cm adult at moderate pace. Jogging drops it to 6,800; running at 9.7 km/h to 6,540. Shorter walkers may exceed 7,700.
How many km do I walk with 10,000 steps?
Most adults cover 6.5–8.0 km in 10,000 steps. The average at 170 cm is 7.04 km. Runners of the same height cover closer to 7.65 km because running stride is longer.
Is walking 3 km a day enough exercise?
3 km (~4,200 steps) adds aerobic value but falls short of the 7,000-step threshold linked to meaningful mortality reduction in Paluch 2022. Consider it a floor, not a target — pair it with errands or a second walk to reach the upper range.
How do I convert a GPS route to steps?
Read the distance in km from the GPS, enter it here with your height and pace, and the calculator returns the expected step count. Comparing the result with your watch's step total shows whether stride calibration is off.
Does stride differ on a treadmill vs. outdoors?
Slightly. Treadmill walking can shorten stride by 3–5% because the belt pulls the foot backward. The calculator estimates outdoor stride; treadmill users may see watch step counts slightly higher than the formula suggests.
How many steps is a 10K run?
Around 13,100 running steps for a 170 cm adult at 9.7 km/h. Taller, longer-strided runners finish near 12,300; shorter runners can exceed 14,000.
